Hey Doug! I wondered what happened to you...

Well, the show at Liberty Hall was my first Phish show. I was so
incredibly psyched weeks before the show that I could hardly stand it.
I'd only discoverd Phish for myself weeks before, after this newsgroup
showed up on our system here at KU. After listening to Picture of Nectar
dozens of times, the Big Night arrived.

We (my girlfriend and I) arrived early and settled ourselves up on the
balcony. I chose that position because I wasn't feeling energetic enough
to defend myself in the fray that was sure to develop below (and was I
right!)

Actually, besides not feeling well, I had begun to view the concert with
some trepidation after seeing so many references on this newsgroup to the
connections that a significant portion of the Phish following has with
the drug culture. My girlfriend has asthma, and I have more allergies
than you can sneeze at, so _normal_ tobacco smoke is bad enough. _Any_
concert is going to be bad enough, but this one was horrendous! Had I had
one of those air tanks that fire fighters use, I _might_ have been able to
stand it. Unfortunately, I hadn't realized that the balcony is where many
of the potheads like to hide out. I spent more time trying to breathe
than I did enjoying the show.

But I did, after all this, enjoy it. The music was excellent and the
stage moves were great. In honor of April Fool's day, Fishman (the
drummer, right?), changed from his usual orange with white circles dress
to a sheer black number with feather boa and a pair of cymbals, and sang
the lead on a song I recognized but can't remember.

Not being familiar enough with their music, I could only recognize just
over half of the songs.

All in all, it was fun, but I probably won't do it again. I'll keep
listening to my PON CD and my few concert tapes, and I'll buy Lawnboy when
it comes out again in May, but I'll stay away from live shows (unless
they're outside!)

I'm probably the only person on this entire group to ever have said
anything that was less than fanatically and wildly enthusiastic about a
Phish concert, but that's the way it is.

Sorry we couldn't have met, Doug!

Bye all.

Chris Vaughn
