Antelope in Review Pt.9 10/29/94
Greetings once again!

Well, today is my birthday and I wanted to take a second out to review a
really phenomenal Antelope, 10/29/94.  Pretty awesome show, very nice and
eventful second set... we see Bike before the ‘Lope, etc.  As we saw last
time (10/31/94), second set RLAAs can be VERY tired and altogether
misplaced.  Generally the 1st set versions have more kick, but this is one
of those versions that proves them wrong.  So let’s cut to the chase!

Memorial Auditorium- Spartansburg, SC  10/29/94 II

2:      Down With Disease-> TMWSIY-> Avenu Malkenu-> TMWSIY-> Sparks->
Uncle Pen, You Enjoy Myself, HYHU-> Bike-> Run Like an Antelope-> Sleeping
Monkey-> Run Like an Antelope
E:      Harry Hood

BIKE -- Utterly goofy... we see the Fishman vacuum solo in there and this
song seems to set the mood for the Antelope to come (is Fish drunk here or
something?)  Into...
HYHU!!!!-- some unusual phrasings and a pause before >>>> (we are in for a
good one)

Antelope -- Intro:  Mike is all over this one at the start.  Pretty
uniquely played by everyone, must have been rehearsed.  Trey is very jumpy
and stuck-up (Fish starts singing some opera lines to mimic the snootiness
of Trey’s work).  Fish and Mike are very prevalent in this intro, which is
nice for a change.

Opening theme: (2:17 )Resoouuunnddddiinngg!!  Ahhh, yes!!  I like it
already!  Trey is very fresh and well mannered, Page is bright-eyed and
ready for action, so am I.

Trill!:  (2:45) Very smooth and well orchestrated... this rendition is a
little fast paced...

Key Change to Em: (2:50) Immediately jumping into a dark theme as so often
happens in these segments.  Trey is really in charge as he heads up a
little descending theme for a while.  Page is backing in full force
tonight!! He is all over the place opening up the intensity of the jam...
we are heading for a hosing!!!
I really dig this feedback that Trey is getting now, he is riding the wave
of his bandmates, Fish and Page are really pushing and setting the
tempo... Mike is not shabby either, although you can’t really hear him on
my tape.  Page is really hammering as Trey starts to mold a solo from the
feedback space... pretty uninteresting so far but then it explodes into a
whirlwind of riffs, no wailing so far but you can just feel it coming.  I
think Fish is really making this one a great, he is so on and ‘ungoofy’ as
he was in BIKE but what can you say, it’s the most unpredictable guy I can
think of!  Trey is pounding out some very serious and darkish lines to get
it up.  He is expanding in that fantastic way we are used to.  Step by
step, the climax is nearing and the solo is climbing simultaneously.  It
explodes into a slight raise that one might call...

Second Gear: (6:55)  a muffled explosion into this one!  Still very
palpable nonetheless.  Sustain from Trey now is very nice, Page is
coloring the picture very dark and now Trey is joining as the jam halts
and we have this dark theme.  I see it as kind of a villainous theme!
Really dark and strange.  But then picks a turn for the more positive and
we see something evolving primarily from Page >>>>

Sleeping Monkey -- really nice and sweet.  I didn’t recognize it at first,
because I wasn’t in that mind set, but it is very clear now.  Really very
seriously sung at first, nothing funny, no silliness at all!!  I can hear
the audience singing it along, ahhhh, how nice!!  Fish is starting to rear
his head with his utterly hilarious voice! > Home on the train! (etc.)
Here is that ‘Let it be’ riff, I really like it’s placement... I mean, it
is pretty cool!
But then!!! >> TREY!!! here is a very soulful and bold solo... I love it
when it comes together like this!  ‘Let it be’ to close and we go directly
into >>>

Drumz of some sort... what is coming....?  Ok... I see it, we are back
where we left off >> Antelope, Em jam segment!  Really intense as there
are riffs and themes evolving left and right from Trey.  Page is REALLY on
tonight and he is just all over the board.  I can’t suggest this version
enough to big Page fans.  There is now this BBFCFM type feel emerging, not
the death-metal edge, just the melody.  Trey is in this
one-side-other-side type of rolling theme now and I am getting a little
dizzy!  The whirlwind is building....!!!! BUILDING!!!!!  UP! UP! UP! UP!
UP! UP! UP!  All the way to>>>>>

Third Gear:  !!!!!!!!!! is all I have to say!!  Wow!! wild and wailing
work from the man!!! He is at the brink of insanity and just like magic,
just as our brains explode, we fall into >>>

Pre-Marco-Groove: (17:05) (Do I immediately hear a Wilson tease from Mike
and Fish?) Mike and Fish are pushing it quite nicely, interesting tempo
and feel, reminiscent of Wilson I guess... Page is getting very crafty and
mooding this one quite exquisitely, very interesting and nice work.

Trey:- Ry, Ry, Rocco!! (quiet, just like 10/31 a couple nights later)

MARCO ESQUANDOLAS: (17:39)

Would you happen to have any spike, man?

Gear Shift Theme: (17:59)  EXPLOSION!!!  I see the hose coming out!!!
OH!!!! I’m all wet!!! YESSSSSSSS!!

Trey:- STGSITHGOYS!!:    Trey is on top of the world and this version is
just brimming with energy, I really think that that this is one of the
greats, no doubt about it!~

End:  (19:30) An absolutely, undeniably nice rendition.  I can’t stress
Fish’s essential role in this sucker.  When he gets serious and pushes the
band, there is no looking back.  You can really get the sense here that
they are definitely working off of each other in a big way throughout the
jam.  I also thought Page was instrumental (yes, he did play his keyboard,
I know) in this one because he was in relentless pursuit of intensity.  I
heard that radio interview with the band a few days ago and someone asked
them what they were thinking when they went into what he called the zone,
and they said that they really tried not to think about anything, because
if they realized they were in the zone and tried to mold it, they would
lose the connection.  You can totally hear that in this case, I think.  I
am listening to this again just thinking that it is totally spontaneous,
totally without preconceived directions in mind.  It comes out of the
silliness of BIKE which really loosens the band up, and this was important
here... they were loose and ready for anything that flowed out of them and
boy did it flow!  So long for now, till next time,
Captain Prichard
